Write a letter to Governor Pritzker!

  1. Dear Governor Pritzker,
At the very least, we need a statewide moratorium on CO2 pipelines and sequestration wells (CCS) until we can decide if this industry should be allowed to operate in Illinois, and, if so, to have robust rules and regulations in place BEFORE they locate here. Although the Inflation Reduction Act does include monies and programs that seriously address the root causes of climate change, it also includes a huge amount of money and tax incentives for an unproven carbon sequestration system that will not remove any existing CO2 from the atmosphere and poses grave dangers to the public immediately and far into the future.
The federal money grab is on with CCS companies who have never, ever installed either CO2 pipeline or sequestration well. At present, over 20 of these companies are seeking permits to put CCS in 6 Illinois counties. They are rushing to get permits before they’ve been okayed by the EPA to even have a CO2 sequestration well. They are rushing to get zoning permits from communities that don’t have any rules governing this type of industry. They are touting safety plans that they don’t fully share with the public, that they don’t intend to fully fund, and that aren’t viable to protect communities from the quick-moving, life threatening dangers that CO2 ruptures pose. They want to bury millions of tons per year of CO2 deep underground while they have no way of controlling its movement when it gets there or any idea of the long-term (we’re talking tens of thousands of years) negative effects of turning sandstone layers into solid rock. When pumped underground CO2 wants to go up and its size and mobility make any tiny crack or open space a possible escape route. What’s UP from this storage space? Our aquifers and drinking water sources!!! So on top of all the negatives already mentioned, these companies have no problem putting the public’s drinking water sources in jeopardy far, far into the future.
From my perspective as a native resident of Illinois, this seems like an insane idea not worth considering. Just reading the preceding paragraph makes it clear that CCS is a poorly conceived, rush job of a plan to create a space for polluting companies to dump their toxic CO2 waste so they can continue to create that waste in massively increasing amounts in such scenarios as the ethanol industry providing sustainable aviation fuel, to mention just one future plan. The CCS companies want huge chunks of taxpayer dollars, massive tax breaks, and fertile land from farmers either for free using eminent domain or for a tiny fraction payment of the money these companies stand to make for a scheme that will place literally millions of citizens in danger from possible ruptures and leaks and from likely contamination of their vital-to-life-itself drinking water sources.
Governor, the people of Illinois deserve a safe and healthy environment now. We, as a people, have an obligation to provide future generations with the clean air, safe drinking water and fertile soil that will sustain their lives as they’ve sustained ours. We cannot run headlong into a plan that allows industries seeking private profit over public good to threaten these resources. Illinois should never become a toxic dumping ground for any industry.
Please support legislation, the Safety Moratorium on Carbon Dioxide Pipelines Act (SB3441/HB4835), that instates a moratorium on CO2 pipelines until we can decide if this industry should be allowed to operate in Illinois, and, if so, to have robust rules and regulations in place BEFORE they locate here.

    Thank you for listening.
    Sincerely,
    Margaret Keylin
