Protect the Mahomet Aquifer
Slip in support of SB1723 (before 4pm Tuesday, April 29)
On April 10, SB1723 passed the Senate on a 55-0 vote! Now it’s headed to the House Environment and Conservation Committee on April 29 for a vote, and we need you to slip in support!
The bill bans the injection of CO2 through, or storage of CO2 under the Mahomet Aquifer, protecting it from contamination if the CO2 were to leak. When CO2 comes in contact with water, it creates carbonic acid that can release toxic metals from rocks that can cause cancer, liver and kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, and more.
The original bill was negotiated and amended during the April senate proceedings. While it now excludes three external upstream areas illustrated on the Mahomet Aquifer's Project Review Area Map that help recharge (replenish groundwater) the aquifer, it bans sequestration activities in the designated sole-source aquifer. The amendment also creates a study of carbon sequestration in the Mahomet Aquifer and the three recharge areas now excluded from the bill.
The Mahomet Aquifer is the lifeblood of Central Illinois, supplying clean drinking water to nearly 1 million people in over 100 communities and tens of thousands of rural homes across 14 counties. The EPA’s 2015 designation of the Mahomet Aquifer as a sole source aquifer underscores its critical importance. Please slip in support of SB1723!
